A variation on that quote I've come across is: "America has one party: the conservative party, with two right wings."

I have a slight quibble with your characterization of the Republican party as "extreme-right." They're just the other half of the center-right, state-corporatist ruling party, except that they use fake populist rhetoric to get elected, instead of fake progressive rhetoric. Also, if "fascism" is defined as collusion between the state and corporations, then both parties are fascist, or quasi-fascist.

Laurie Essig

You're right- for some reason I confuse the GOP with their rhetoric- but the corporatist leaders of that party are NO different than the Dems- they just mobilize a different base with a different rhetoric- a rhetoric that is equally divorced from what they actually do and want.

It will be interesting for you living in Canada where three political parties, or more, have been the standard norm for years, if not decades. If it were not for the New Democratic Party (the NDP), many leftist reforms would never have been put on the table or seriously discussed.

Laurie Essig

Hmm. A real multi-party system. No wonder the American corporate press is describing Canada as a nation of nutty socialists. Real reform? You crazy Canadians. What's next? Universal healthcare? Universal access to higher ed? Democracy?

I love when you talk up diversity Laurie (here political diversity). I have all the census data on my computer in a GIS. I brought up the census blocks for Middlebury where you live. Doesn't look too diverse. In fact it's over 90% white. My guess is that is also votes overwhelmingly leftist. So get back to me when you move to the ghetto. You won't of course. It's too cushy and easy living in a clean, nice, rural town. But it makes it hard to take your "social crusader" label seriously.

You know what's really funny? Whenever liberal white folks I know move to a "diverse" neighborhood, I can set my watch by how long it takes them to rethink all of the leftist gobledegook they learned in college. Haha. Keep on marxing!
