“The goal is not to win a popularity contest or to get an award — even one as esteemed as the Nobel Peace Prize,” Mr. Obama said. “The goal is to advance American interests, make ourselves a continuing force for good in the world — something that we have been for decades now.”A force for good in the world? For decades? Now Obama cannot even pretend that he is offering the world something different than the Bushies? He actually defends them as a force for good in the world. Gag. Yes, that's the line that made me gag. I actually nearly lost my Cheerios. Gag. Gross. Ick. Accepting Peace Prize, Obama Evokes ‘Just War’ - NYTimes.com. And Obama is not just an apologist for the Bush regime, he is in fact far worse than the Bushies when it comes to the wars. Despite mainstream media accounts to the cnntrary, Obama is NOT "ending the war in Iraq." There are actually still 124,000 troops in Iraq (plus 247,000 private contractors- and please note that "private contractors" is code for mercenary soldiers who have little regulation from the government, but receive their income from our tax dollars). Add the 98,000 troops that will be in Afghanistan after the latest surge and Obama will have 222,000 troops deployed. This is 36,000 MORE troops than Bush ever had deployed. All of this would be depressing, but not necessarily gag-inducing if Obama had gone to Oslo and said "I don't deserve this." Or even just "I am trying to fight a just war and end an unjust war." Not "America has been a force for good in the world for decades." Gag. There's something about watching the real Obama come out as an apologist for Bush that is really and truly nauseating. I think the nausea is about my own stupidity. I, like many progressive Americans, betrayed myself by working to help get Obama elected thinking "at least he'll be better than Bush." When it comes to the wars and acting like Emperor of the World, Obama is now officially worse than Bush. He may look better, talk better, and even, who knows, smell better. But Obama is not just escalating Bush's wars, he's now defending them. And it is my own stupidity, my own willingness to be betrayed, my own belief that Obama would not be worse that chokes me. And makes the whole scene of President Obama acting worse than President Bush absurd, but just not funny.
